Public Interest Environmental Attorney Fellowship

The Environmental Law and Policy Center (“ELPC”) seeks to hire a public interest attorney advocate who is a recent law school graduate for a one-year Environmental Attorney Fellow position in our Chicago, Madison or Des Moines offices starting in Fall 2009.  The Environmental Attorney Fellow will work on ELPC’s environmental litigation and policy issues in the Midwest and on related federal issues. The Fellowship position is potentially renewable for a second year.

 

ORGANIZATION:  ELPC is the Midwest’s leading public interest environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization.  ELPC’s major program areas include: promoting clean energy development strategies that solve global warming problems and reduce environmental degradation by encouraging energy efficiency and renewable energy alternatives to conventional power plants; promoting innovative transportation approaches, such as the development of a Midwest high-speed rail network, that will lead to cleaner air and more jobs; and protecting and preserving critical natural resources and improve the quality of life in our communities. One of ELPC’s premises is that environmental progress and economic development can be achieved together.  ELPC’s multidisciplinary professional staff includes 40 attorneys, M.B.A.s, public policy advocates and communications specialists. RESPONSIBILITIES:   Work with ELPC’s Executive Director and Senior Attorneys on litigation and policy initiatives for ELPC’s Clean Energy and Global Warming Solutions Projects, Transportation and Land Use Reform Project, and Wild and Natural Places Preservation Project activities.  Assist ELPC’s Executive Director on special projects. Participate as member of multidisciplinary project teams of policy advocates, communications specialists and organizers.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Recent law school graduate, including attorneys who are completing judicial clerkships or have no more than two years of other legal practice.  Strong academic record and excellent writing, speaking and analytical skills.  Smart self-starter with track record of initiative and success.  Interest in and substantive law and policy knowledge of at least one of the following fields: energy, environmental, transportation, air quality, land use and/or natural resources law. The attorney should also understand and enjoy multifaceted public policy strategic advocacy that involves media, legislative, policy analysis and organizing approaches coordinated with strong and effective legal advocacy. An inspired and demonstrated commitment to public interest advocacy and an ability to work productively as a member of a team of skilled professionals is required.

 

 

SALARY:  $45,000 annual salary for the fellowship for new law school graduates, plus excellent benefits.  ELPC encourages applicants to seek funding that will help to support their salary (in full or part) from sources such as law schools’ grants for post-graduate public interest law work, Equal Justice Works and others.
