Environmental Policy/Economics Internship - Summer 2009 (Sioux Falls, SD)

The Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC) is seeking to hire an undergraduate or graduate student intern in our Sioux Falls, South Dakota office for Summer 2009. This intern will support ELPC’s policy advocacy work in the Great Plains.
 
ORGANIZATION:  ELPC is the Midwest’s/Great Plains’ leading public interest environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization.  ELPC is headquartered in Chicago and has additional offices and staff in Des Moines, Iowa; Jamestown, North Dakota; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Madison, Wisconsin.  ELPC’s major program areas include: promoting clean energy development strategies that solve global warming problems and reduce environmental degradation by encouraging renewable energy development and energy efficiency alternatives to conventional power plants; promoting innovative transportation approaches that will lead to cleaner air and more jobs; and protecting and preserving critical natural resources and improving the quality of life in our communities. One of ELPC’s premises is that environmental progress and economic development can be achieved together.  ELPC’s multidisciplinary professional staff includes 40 attorneys, M.B.A.s, public policy advocates and communications specialists. RESPONSIBILITIES:   Work with ELPC policy advocates and economists on policy development and overall advocacy issues including: (1) Implementation and promotion of the Rural Energy for America Program in the federal Farm Bill to increase alternative energy and energy efficiency projects on farms and ranches and in rural communities; (2) Outreach and coalition building on clean energy advocacy; and (3) Assisting with Global Warming Solutions work. ELPC economics and policy interns engage in public outreach and research and analysis of energy and environmental topics, state and federal legislation, review of reports and summary memo writing, and updating and managing of databases. Interns may attend meetings with state and federal agencies, public officials and citizen groups.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Strong academic record, excellent writing and analytical skills, and a demonstrated interest in and commitment to public interest and environmental advocacy.  Undergraduate/graduate students in political science, economics or related field.

INTERN STIPEND:  $225 per week for ten weeks.

    Maybe I did not read well enough but when would the internship commence and end and when is the deadline for the application?

    There is not a hard deadline for the position, but we would ask that you submit your application materials as soon as possible. The internship is for 10 weeks with the start date depending on when you would be available.

    Additionally, we request you send in contact information for 3 references along with your application. There is not a seperate form for this.
