PUBLIC INTEREST ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY ADVOCATE – IOWA

The Environmental Law & Policy Center (ELPC), the Midwest’s leading environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization, seeks to hire a Policy Advocate to work in our Des Moines office to promote clean energy, clean water and conservation projects in Iowa. The Policy Advocate will play a key role in ELPC’s mission to achieve environmental progress and economic development together in Iowa and will work with ELPC’s regional program staff on environmental quality and clean energy advocacy across the Midwest/Great Plains.

ORGANIZATION: ELPC is the Midwest’s leading public interest environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization. ELPC’s major program areas include: promoting clean energy development strategies that help solve global warming problems and reduce environmental degradation by encouraging energy efficiency and renewable energy alternatives to conventional power plants; promoting innovative transportation approaches, such as the development of a Midwest high-speed rail network, that will lead to cleaner air and more jobs; and protecting and preserving critical natural resources that improve the quality of life in our communities. ELPC’s primary mission is to achieve environmental progress and economic development together. ELPC’s multidisciplinary professional staff includes 40 attorneys, M.B.A.s, public policy advocates and communications specialists. ELPC has offices located in Chicago, IL, Des Moines, IA, Jamestown, ND, Sioux Falls, SD, Columbus, OH, Madison, WI, and Washington, D.C. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Policy Advocate will work to identify and execute opportunities to advance ELPC’s environmental agenda in Iowa. These include: clean renewable energy and energy efficiency policy analysis and advocacy in Iowa; Farm Bill – Clean Energy Project policy development and advocacy before Congress and USDA, as well as on-the-ground implementation working with farm groups in Iowa; clean water policy advocacy and analysis in Iowa and along the Mississippi River states; and representation of ELPC in public forums and with key business, governmental and agricultural colleagues in Iowa. This position requires occasional travel throughout the Midwest and extensive travel to Chicago for initial training and orientation. The advocate will also engage with ELPC’s multidisciplinary project teams, including energy policy advocates, eco-business experts and communications specialists on statewide, regional and national campaigns as needed.
 
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should have strong academic records, excellent oral communication and writing skills, strong analytic abilities and a demonstrated interest in public interest and environmental advocacy. Candidates should have at least 3 years of experience in policy analysis and advocacy. Background in energy, water, environmental and/or agricultural policy strongly preferred. Advanced degree (law, policy, business or economics) strongly preferred.
