ELPC, Pollution Control Board Find Coal Mine Violated Permit 624 Times

ELPC’s analysis of data spanning seven years found that Springfield Coal Company’s Industry Mine violated its water pollution permit 624 times between 2004 and 2011. On Nov. 16, the Illinois Pollution Control Board agreed with our analysis, finding that violations occurred for pollutants including sulfates, iron, manganese, pH and total suspended and settled solids.
