Senator Blunt’s Bill to Rollback Fuel Economy Standards and  Create Loopholes for Auto Industry is Misguided

Rolling back common sense fuel economy standards will cost people more at the gas pump, increase pollution, reduce America’s technological innovation leadership and competitiveness, and increase use of foreign oil

STATEMENT BY HOWARD A. LEARNER

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ENVIRONMENTAL LAW & POLICY CENTER

Howard Learner, Executive Director of the Environmental Law & Policy Center, said in response to a bill introduced in the U.S. Senate today by Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri and others that will weaken the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards for the auto industry:

“The misguided Blunt legislation moves America in the wrong direction for fuel efficiency and innovation. It will lead to more trips to the gas pump for consumers and more imports of foreign oil.

“The Blunt bill creates new loopholes for the auto industry and weakens incentives for technological innovation and American competitiveness. We’re disappointed that Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan and others signed on to Senator Blunt’s legislation.

“The Blunt bill will force consumers to pump gas more often, adds more pollution that harms public health, and weakens America’s technological innovation leadership and competitiveness.”
