ELPC Pleased Public Transit and Amtrak Funding Included in Stimulus Package

STATEMENT BY HOWARD A. LEARNER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ENVIRONMENTAL LAW & POLICY CENTER

Chicago — “The Environmental Law & Policy Center (ELPC) is pleased that the new stimulus legislation includes $14 billion of vital funding for public transit and $1 billion for Amtrak to make up for part of the revenue losses due to people working at home and traveling much less during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said ELPC Executive Director Howard Learner.

“This $14 billion to support public transit should be a first installment toward the full funding needed to keep the trains and buses moving to provide essential mobility for all. ELPC has joined with transit agencies calling on Congress to provide the $32 billion needed to avoid service cuts that impair essential workers getting to their jobs, and all of us have access to hospitals, medical care providers and groceries.”
