Prior to her work in municipal utilities, Janean worked as a staff attorney at ELPC on public utilities and clean water cases, and a Principal Assistant Attorney General at the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, supervising attorneys in complex environmental litigation. During her tenure at the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, she managed clean water, drinking water, and hazardous waste cases in partnership with the Ohio EPA, litigating in both state and federal courts.

What’s a place you love in the Midwest?

Hocking Hills is truly magical – I visit multiple times a year and it never gets old. The sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, and ancient hemlock forests remind me why protecting Ohio’s natural treasures matters so much. Closer to home, I love Glen Echo Park in my neighborhood. It’s where I got married, and it’s a daily reminder that environmental protection isn’t just about grand landscapes; it’s also about the green spaces in our communities that bring people together.

What drives you to do this work?

Social responsibility and a deep belief that we’re here to make things better. Clean water and clean energy aren’t luxuries – they’re fundamental to healthy communities. After sixteen years practicing environmental law, I’ve seen firsthand how strategic litigation and policy advocacy can drive real change for Ohio consumers and communities. That’s what keeps me motivated every day.
