Ohio Verdicts Only a Step in Fighting FirstEnergy Corruption

Former House Speaker and ex-GOP party chairman found guilty in FirstEnergy corruption scandal; bribed PUCO chairman yet to be charged

STATEMENT BY ROBERT KELTER, ELPC SENIOR ATTORNEY

“This verdict concludes an important phase in the First Energy scandal,” said ELPC Senior Attorney Robert Kelter. “A public utility can’t bribe a Speaker to get power plants bailed out. But, there’s another important part where neither the courts nor the PUCO have done their job yet. No one has taken action yet to address FirstEnergy’s bribing former Public Utilities Commission of Ohio Chairman Sam Randazzo with a $4 million payment as he was coming on to the Commission. This massive, unprecedented scandal will not be concluded until FirstEnergy and Mr. Randazzo are held accountable for the $4 million in bribes FirstEnergy admitted giving him.”
