The Trump administration is targeting electric vehicle charging stations in its latest attack on clean transportation. Just as gas drivers rely on gas stations, EV drivers depend on charging stations to get where they need to go. In 2021, Congress approved funding to build a national EV charging network as part of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Now, the Trump administrations is proposing to end that progress.
For years, EV charging equipment has been required to include at least 55% American-made parts. Manufacturers have built an industry around that standard. But the administration now wants to raise the requirement to 100% immediately. No EV charger currently made in the U.S. meets that standard, which would effectively halt new projects and disrupt a growing industry. Electric vehicles are a key part of cutting climate pollution and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. But electric vehicles and their drivers need reliable charging infrastructure to make the switch possible.
Without federal funding, private companies are unlikely to build chargers in rural areas and multifamily properties, leaving major gaps in America’s charging network. The Federal Highway Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation need to hear from you. This proposal will undermine EV charging programs, slow progress on climate solutions, and limit affordable transportation options.

Take Action: Stop US Department of Transportation from blocking funding for America’s EV charging network.
