While most of Iowa is leading the way on clean energy, Cedar Falls Utilities (CFU) is falling behind. Across the state, more than 60% of electricity now comes from renewable sources like wind and solar, but 99% of CFU’s power generation still comes from fossil fuels.
CFU owns more coal generation than any other municipal utility in Iowa and has no clear plan to move away from coal and gas beyond a vague 2050 carbon neutral goal. Instead of investing in renewables, CFU is building a new gas plant that could lock our community into decades of higher costs and pollution.
Cedar Falls deserves better. We should be investing in clean, affordable energy that supports local jobs, protects public health, and ensures a sustainable future.
