Chicago Transit Authority Creates Roadmap to Meet Full Bus Electrification by 2040

We’re especially heartened that CTA is prioritizing communities that are overburdened with diesel pollution.

Statement by Susan Mudd, Senior Policy Advocate

“The Environmental Law & Policy Center is pleased the Chicago Transit Authority has released a strategic plan to meet the promised transition of its 1800 bus fleet to electric by 2040. Happily, the plan was released in time for CTA to seek recently-passed federal infrastructure funds, as well as already-existing state Volkswagen mitigation trust funds and other state capital dollars.

“We’re especially heartened that CTA is prioritizing communities that are overburdened with diesel pollution by stating it will first retrofit and add charging equipment to its garages and routes on the west and south sides of Chicago. Residents of those neighborhoods who now experience worse health in part due to polluted air, deserve to be first in line for cleaner air and buses.
