House Passes SPEED Act, Weakening Environmental Review and Oversight

WASHINGTON, D.C. The House today passed the Standardizing Permitting and Expediting Economic Development (SPEED) Act (H.R. 4776), legislation that would significantly weaken the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) in the name of faster permitting. The bill reduces government accountability and limits public oversight of infrastructure and energy projects that affect local communities.

Statement from Kevin Brubaker, Deputy Director, Environmental Law & Policy Center

“The SPEED Act narrows the scope of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), reducing opportunities for the public to understand and engage in improving projects that will impact their communities. Weakening NEPA means less transparency, fewer opportunities for public input, and greater risks to clean air, clean water, and other resources communities rely.”
