POWER Act Introduced to Set Standards for Illinois Data Centers

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Today, Illinois lawmakers introduced the POWER Act (SB4103/HB5513), a bill to establish new statewide standards for data center development, including requirements related to clean energy procurement, utility cost responsibility, water use, pollution controls, and community engagement. The POWER Act aims to protect ratepayers, safeguard Illinois’ water resources, and ensure that large new energy users do not undermine the state’s clean energy and environmental justice goals.

Statement from Brad Klein, Managing Attorney,
Environmental Law and Policy Center:

“The POWER Act turns the data center boom into a ‘race to the top’ in Illinois. Data centers compete for fast, reliable access to Illinois’ stable power grid – and those that bring their own new clean power and cover their own costs can earn that quick access. With these targeted policy tweaks, Illinois will attract high-quality projects that support economic development while protecting communities, ratepayers, and the environment.”
