EPA Proposes Eliminating Greenhouse Gas Reporting

Greenhouse gas reporting is fundamental to sound clean air policy.

Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a proposed rule to eliminate its Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP). If finalized, the rule would remove reporting obligations for virtually all large industrial facilities.

GHGRP data provides a significant source of information about climate pollution from industrial facilities and entire economic sectors. Removing this data would make it far more difficult to quantify, analyze, and advance climate solutions necessary to hold polluters accountable.

Statement by Wendy Bloom, Senior Attorney,
Environmental Law & Policy Center

“Greenhouse gas reporting is fundamental to sound clean air policy. Without it, we lose the tools needed for transparent, evidence-based decision-making. Here in the Midwest, industries like steel, cement manufacturing, and oil and gas are major emitters, and communities deserve to know what’s going into the air around them. We cannot protect clean air, public health, or the climate when the EPA withholds critical emissions data. The public has a right to know what industries are putting into the air we all breathe.”
